Highlights from HCSS Education's bumper 2016

HCSS Education hit the news headlines with some major developments in 2016. We welcomed new owners, released a ground-breaking new software system and updated an existing solution. And we have just recently announced the retirement of our founder.

Before we fully engage our minds in 2017 mode, we wanted to take this opportunity to look back on the highlights from this year and thank everybody that was a part of it.

Severe financial challenges facing academies in 2017

Managing an academy trust’s finances has been a difficult job in recent years, but as the calendar year closes new problems have come into focus for 2017 and beyond.

HCSS Education investigates some of the biggest financial challenges academies will face in the new year and beyond.

No relief from cost pressures

This week, the nation’s public spending watchdog issued a grave warning to schools that they would have to make £3 billion of savings before 2020.

HCSS Top 10 Christmas Films

We count down our all-time favourite Christmas films that are guaranteed to charm, entertain and in the odd case terrify you in to feeling festive!

A modern take on the Christmas Carol story, I love this film because you get the classic plotline but in a very funny, cynical, unsentimental way. There are some great characters (the violent Ghost of Christmas Present fairy is a favourite) plus Bill Murray plays the lead, what else could you possibly want?

Key 103 Mission Christmas, Cash for Kids

‘‘Mission Christmas’’, Cash for Kids is all about giving gifts to children between the ages of 0-18 living in poverty and making their Christmas morning extra special.

More than 1 in 3 children in Greater Manchester live in poverty - their parents earn less than 60% of the UK average and are often unable to provide a house with central heating and a hot meal in the evening.

That’s why for the fourth year running we are once again supporting Key 103 ‘‘Mission Christmas’’ appeal and helping them hit the target of raising over £2 million pounds of gifts and cash.

Autumn Statement: 3 need to knows for school finance staff

This Autumn Statement was a sobering one for many, not least for head teachers and school finance staff who desperately hoped that the new Chancellor would help them address mounting funding pressures.

Here are three of the biggest takeaways that school leaders and education finance professionals need to know about.

Glossary of accounting and finance terms

With the release of our new HCSS Accounting software, we decided to produce this handy list of accounting and finance terms for your reference.

Balance Sheet

A balance sheet is a financial statement at a given point in time. It provides a snapshot summary of what the school owns or is owed - assets - and what it owes - liabilities - at a particular date.

The balance sheet therefore shows how the school is being funded and how you are using these funds.

Four things to bear in mind if you want to set up a MAT

Setting up a multi-academy trust (MAT) is a big step to take for any school or academy. It involves working closely with different partners, while also juggling the completion of legal processes and day-to-day operations.

Drawing on the experiences of Glen Duxbury, Finance Director at the newly formed Pathfinder Multi-Academy Trust and Archbishop Holgate’s School in York, we have identified four key points to bear in mind when setting up a MAT.

Thinking customer first underpins HCSS Education's success

When Howard Jackson set up HCSS Education in 2003, the mature and technologically advanced company of today was a faraway dream. Even though the company has grown and changed a lot since those days, the values that underpin it still hold true.

The most fundamental of these values is to put the customer’s needs ahead of everything else.

HCSS Education started small. Some of the company’s earliest customers recall a simple budget planning tool built on Microsoft Excel.
